Here's exactly what "3D" means today, what's legal on the road, and the best way to get the look on your car. The Honest Answer ## Are 3D number plates road legal? "3D" covers two very different plates, and the law treats them very differently. The short version: raised 3D gel is legal; flat-printed two-tone 3D text is not - on any plate made since September 2021. 1. ### Before September 2021 - BS AU 145d Printed 3D-effect text - black characters with grey shading that mimics depth - was permitted under the old standard, and it became one of the most popular premium styles in the UK. 2. ### September 2021 - BS AU 145e arrives The current standard requires characters in a single solid shade of black. Two-tone shading fails that test, so printed 3D text can no longer be fitted to new road plates. Plates made to 145d and fitted before the change remain legal until they're replaced. 3. ### Today - two routes to the 3D look Physically raised lettering is still fully legal because the characters themselves are solid black. That means 3D gel domes and 4D laser-cut acrylic are the road-legal ways to get real depth on your registration. [Read the display rules on gov.uk](https://www.gov.uk/displaying-number-plates). Raised 3D gel plates with solid black characters are fully road legal under BS AU 145e. Flat-printed 3D-effect text uses two-tone shading, which the current standard prohibits - so printed 3D text is show-use only on any plate made since September 2021. **My plates have printed 3D text from before 2021 - are they still legal?** Plates manufactured to the previous standard, BS AU 145d, and fitted before September 2021 remain legal on the vehicle. Once you replace them, the new plates must meet BS AU 145e - which means solid black characters. **What is the difference between 3D and 4D number plates?** 3D gel builds depth with a smooth polyurethane dome over each character, giving rounded, glossy lettering. 4D plates use solid acrylic characters cut by laser, giving sharp, squared edges and stronger shadows. Both are road legal; the choice is purely about the look you prefer. **How much do 3D number plates cost?** Prices depend on the style and size you choose, and they're always live in our plate builder - enter your registration and the exact price updates as you build. Road-legal 3D gel is the most popular choice on this page. **Can I have 3D gel plates on a motorbike?** Yes. Gel lettering is applied at the correct smaller motorcycle character specification, keeping the plate fully compliant for bikes registered from September 2001. ### PLEASE NOTE:  We ONLY sell Legal number plates with Documents Required, the below article is for informational purposes only. 3D Number Plates are made by adding black and grey characters which give number plate characters a 3D look without them being raised off the number plate. The market for both models has multiplied over the years, and some consumers are puzzled as to which to buy. Both are part of our enhanced character range and give your plates a dynamic edge. The distinction lies in the materials and processes used to create the characters. 3D number plates, as we described earlier, are made with 3D effect lettering in a two tone black and grey leaving a smooth profile after printing though giving the characters a 3D, raised look. 4D plates are distinctive in that they are made of solid acrylic. This makes a precise and ‘boxed’ cut around the characters. So while both are 3D in appearance, the 4D plates give a completely different look. ## How Much Do 3D Registration Plates Cost?
